December 17 (SeeNews) - The Romanian leu regained a little ground against the euro on Monday, dealers said.
"The leu closed at 3.5410/55 per euro, gaining during the day in contrast to most of the rest of the regional emerging market currencies," one dealer told SeeNews.
Romanian citizens returning home for the holidays are injecting euro into the market, which supports the leu and keeps it from weakening at this time of the year, the dealer said. The Romanian currency ended at 3.5545/95 on Friday and 3.5215/45 per euro on Thursday.
The Romanian central bank (BNR) set its reference exchange rate, used for statistical purposes, at 3.5584 per euro on Monday, compared to 3.5484 on Friday. For the dollar, the reference exchange rate was set at 2.4789 versus Friday's 2.4386 lei.
Interest rates on overnight leu deposits fell to an average 6.54%/7.19% on Monday from 7.10%/7.67% on Friday.
Turnover on the interbank leu deposit market rose to 1,883.8 million lei on Friday from 1,235.5 million lei on Thursday. The BNR will issue Monday's figures on Tuesday.
