October 23 (SeeNews) - The Romanian leu closed tad stronger against the euro on Friday in dull trading and low volumes, dealers said.
The leu ended at 4.2840/2890 per euro, compared to 4.2880/2930 per euro on Thursday.
The Romanian currency opened near the 4.29-per-euro notch and was traded mostly near that level, one dealer told SeeNews.
Political uncertainty has been putting pressure on the leu since the beginning of the month after the country’s minority government fell in a no-confidence vote.
Earlier on Friday, Romania’s Prime Minister-designate Lucian Croitoru, an advisor to the central bank governor, unveiled his cabinet nominees and now has to convince opposition parties to back the line-up when it comes up for approval in Parliament next week.
The BNR set its reference exchange rate at 4.2894 per euro on Friday, compared to 4.2923 per euro on Thursday. For the U.S. dollar, the BNR set its reference exchange rate at 2.8508 versus Thursday's 2.8672.
Turnover on the interbank leu deposit market rose to 4.503 billion lei on Thursday from 3.719 billion lei on Wednesday. The BNR will issue Friday’s turnover figures on Monday.
Interest rates on overnight leu deposits fell to 7.49%/7.99% on Friday from 7.75%/8.25% on Thursday.
