August 30 (SeeNews) - Romania's foreign minister Bogdan Aurescu will support the suspension of the EU-Russia visa agreement during the EU foreign ministers’ meeting taking place on Tuesday and Wednesday in Prague, the ministry said.
Bogdan Aurescu will also express Romania's openness for measures to restrict the movement of Russian tourists on the EU’s territory, the foreign ministry said in a press release on Monday evening.
Aurescu will also reiterate the need for member states to continue providing consistent support for Ukraine and will highlight Romania's political, economic and humanitarian contribution to these efforts, according to the statement.
Referring to the consequences of the war in Ukraine for the countries in the region, Aurescu will restate arguments in favor of a strong EU support for Moldova, a country deeply affected by the war.
On Saturday, Romanian opposition parties called on the government to “demonstrate more diplomatic firmness” against Russian president Vladimir Putin and stop the issuing of tourist visas to Russian citizens.
"With the exception of humanitarian visas to support representatives of civil society, political opposition and the ones unjustly persecuted in Russia, Russian citizens should not be welcome in Romania or in the European Union, given the brutal military invasion of Ukraine," opposition parties USR, PMP and Forta Dreptei wrote in a joint letter to coalition government leader Nicolae Ciuca.
On August 26, 56 MEPs sent a letter to European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen, European Council president Charles Michel and Czech prime minister Petr Fiala, asking them to support the initiative of EU countries such as the Baltic states and Finland to suspend the issuance of tourist visas to Russian citizens, Renew Europe MEP Salima Yenbou wrote in a social media post.
