September 6 (SeeNews) - Romania will launch a tender for a 700 million euro ($772 million) contract for the construction of a new terminal at Bucharest's Henri Coanda International Airport, transport minister Razvan Cuc said on Friday.
"The airport manager informed me that in about three weeks' time, maximum one month, he will publish the tender for the design and construction of a new terminal at Otopeni worth 700 million euro," transport minster Cuc said in an interview for local website DCNews streamed on YouTube.
The investment will be financed from EU funds and from the budget of the Bucharest Airports National Company (CNAB).
Cuc also said that the airport located in Otopeni, 16.5 km north of Bucharest's city centre, was originally designed to serve 7 million passengers per year, while currently it handles close to 14 million.
CNAB operates Henri Coanda airport and a smaller one, Aurel Vlaicu.
A total of 57 airlines currently operate at the Henri Coanda airport, carrying passengers to more than 128 destinations.
Passenger numbers at Henri Coanda International Airport rose 8.5% year-on-year to 2.99 million in the first quarter of 2019, while aircraft movements increased by 3.6% to 27,029, CNAB said in May.
