September 23 (SeeNews) - The Romanian authorities reported 1,767 new Covid-19 cases in the past 24 hours on Wednesday, the highest daily increase since the beginning of the pandemic, bringing the total count to 116,415.
Daily coronavirus infections in Romania previously peaked at 1,713 on September 16, according to data from the interior and health ministries.
A total of 4,550 people have died from the disease since February 26 when the first coronavirus case was reported in Romania. As many as 498 patients are being treated in intensive care units.
As of Wednesday, 93,558 people have recovered and were discharged from hospital, the ministries said.
As of September 23, 8,917 people diagnosed with the new coronavirus were in isolation at home, while 6,959 people were in isolation in institutions Also, 23,442 people are in quarantine at home, and 179 people are in quarantine in institutions.
A total of 2.278 million tests for coronavirus have been so far carried out in Romania.
The government extended the state of alert introduced due to the coronavirus pandemic by 30 days as from September 15 due to the rise in the daily number of new infections. The state of alert requires people to wear masks in closed public spaces and while travelling by public transport.
