March 1 (SeeNews) - Romania's president Klaus Iohannis said his country is ready to serve as a hub for the distribution of humanitarian assistance to Ukraine which is resisting a Russian invasion.
By becoming such a distribution centre, Romania will capitalise on its position as a neighbouring state with a long border with Ukraine, Iohannis said during the U.S.president Joe Biden’s Conference Call with Allies and Partners on Monday evening, according to a press release from the Romanian presidential office.
During the conference call, Iohannis also called for additional troops and capabilities to be sent to Romania and stressed the need to support neighbouring Moldova, both in terms of management of Ukrainian refugees and in the event of a possible new energy crisis.
Over 70,800 refugees have crossed into Romania from Ukraine by Monday 11am, of which approximately 37,400 have left for other destinations and 373 have requested asylum, according to the latest data from the government.
On Sunday, Romania's government announced that it will send fuel, ammunition and food worth 3 million euro ($3.4 million) to Ukraine, while also offering to treat wounded people.
Romania has a 600 km long border with Ukraine.
