BUCHAREST (Romania), November 17 (SeeNews) – Romania posted the lowest research and development (R&D) intensity in the European Union in 2013, while Slovenia posted the highest R&D intensity in Southeast Europe (SEE), the bloc's statistics office said on Monday.
The R&D intensity, i.e. R&D expenditure as a percentage of of its gross domestic product (GDP), stood at 0.39% of GDP in Romania last year, compared to 0.38% in 2014, Eurostat said in a statement.
Slovenia spent 2.59% of its GDP on R&D last year, an increase from 1.37% in 2004.
The majority of countries in SEE conducted R&D in the business enterprise sector last year, whereas the sector with least R&D was the private non-profit sector.
The report covers all EU 28 states, as well as some other countries, including Turkey and Serbia.
