April 20 (SeeNews) - Bulgaria and Romania were among the among the EU member states which were least dependent on energy imports in 2016, data from Eurostat showed on Friday.
Romania imported only 22% of the energy it consumed in 2016, ranking third among all EU countries, while Bulgaria posted a share of just below 40%, Eurostat's data showed.
Croatia and Slovenia posted shares of just below the EU average, which stood at 53.6%, while Greece imported over 70% of the energy it consumed in 2016.
Despite the relatively low share of energy imports, Bulgaria is heavily dependent on Russian gas supplies. The country imports almost all the gas it needs to cover its domestic needs via a pipeline from Ukraine through Romania.
