January 6 (SeeNews) - The U.S. Department of Defense said that it has awarded Raytheon Missiles & Defense a $208.7 million (196.6 million euro) contract for the delivery of a Naval Strike Missile Coastal Defence System (NSM CDS) to Romania.
The contract includes options which can raise its cumulative value to $217.1 million, the defense department said in a press release on Thursday.
It added that 60% of the works for the delivery of the NSM CDS will be performed in Kongsberg, Norway, 34% in Tucson, Arizona, 2% in Schrobenhausen, Germany, 1% in Raufoss, Norway, while the remaining 3% will be distributed across various sites, each being allocated less than a 1% share.
Norway's Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace said last month that it was awarded a NOK 1.35 billion ($135 million/ 128 million euro) contract by Raytheon Missiles & Defense for the delivery of a NSM CDS to Romania.
In May 2021, Raytheon Technologies said that it has signed a contract with Romania for the delivery of NSM CDS. The NSM is a long-range precision missile that protects against threats from land and sea, with land-launched missiles having a range of over 100 nautical miles and using advanced detector and target identification technologies.
The NSM CDS was initially developed by Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace to meet the Royal Norwegian Navy’s requirements for frigates and coastal corvettes. Raytheon entered into a partnership with its Norwegian peer in order to be able to offer the NSM to the U.S. and other international partners.
