BELGRADE (Serbia), October 26 (SeeNews) – China's Power Construction Corporation (Powerchina) has expressed interest in participating in the construction of transport infrastructure in Serbia, the Serbian government said.

Powerchina is interested in joining the project for the construction of a motorway linking the Serbian city of Nis with Pristina in Kosovo via Merdare and of expressways linking Belgrade to Zrenjanin and Iverak to Lajkovac, the government said in a statement on Thursday.

The 77 km Nis-Merdare motorway is part of a road link extending to Albanian's capital Tirana and further on to the country's Adriatic port of Durres.

During a meeting with representatives of Powerchina on Thursday, infrastructure minister Zorana Mihajlovic proposed the establishment of a joint working group to discuss the participation of the Chinese companies in the project, the Serbian government said.

In June, Powerchina and Azeri civil engineering company Azvirt started the construction of the Ostruznica-Bubanj Potok stretch of the Belgrade bypass road. Serbia plans to invest $207 million (181.9 million euro) in the construction of the section, which will have a length of 19.5 kilometres.
