February 10 (SeeNews) - Belgian port operator Port of Antwerp has shown interest in the construction of a new Danube river port in Belgrade, Serbia's infrastructure ministry said.
A site for the project has yet to be determined, with construction works expected to start in late 2023, the ministry said in a press release on Wednesday.
"The Belgrade port is one of the most important projects that the ministry and the government are preparing, as it has the potential to become the most important port project on the Danube," infrastructure minister Tomislav Momirovic said during a visit to Antwerp port.
The construction of a new Belgrade port was originally planned to start in 2021 but due to the coronavirus pandemic, the ministry has moved the starting date to 2022.
Belgrade's existing port on the Danube port located close to the city center, is operated by Luka Beograd. The port can handle 3 million tonnes of cargo and 10,000 20-foot containers per year, according to information published on its website.
