December 2 (SeeNews) - Austrian group PORR has been awarded a 472 million lei ($115 million/ 97 million euro) contract for the reconstruction of a railway bridge in southern Romania, it said on Wednesday.
Works will be carried out through PORR's local subsidiary PORR Construct and will last for 30 months, PORR said in a press release.
"The modernisation of the historically significant rail link between Bucharest and Giurgiu and the landmark in Gradistea will improve the transport infrastructure in the economic region in the long term," PORR CEO Karl-Heinz Strauss said.
The design-and-build project along the Bucharest - Giurgiu line includes the renewal of a total of four bridges, track works, the refurbishment of the signaling systems and works to repair station buildings along the line. The contract also includes the reopening of the Gradistea Bridge, which collapsed during a flood in 2005, and will significantly improve freight traffic in the region, PORR noted.
Romania's transport ministry said in November that the project will be financed with EU funds for the 2014-2020 period.
