February 16 (SeeNews) - Total passenger traffic at Bulgarian airports of Varna and Burgas increased to 58,449 in January from 22,177 in the same month of 2021, Germany's Fraport Group, which operates the two coastal airports, said.
"Fraport’s Group airports worldwide continued to report a positive passenger trend in January 2022. Most of the Group airports achieved significant passenger gains, with some exceeding 100% growth year-on-year - albeit compared to the strongly reduced traffic levels in January 2021," Fraport said in a statement last week.
Passenger traffic at Varna Airport jumped to 47,364 in January from 20,468 in the same month of 2021, while passengers at Burgas Airport soared to 11,085 from 1,709.
Cargo handled at the two airports fell by 73% year-on-year to 138 tonnes in the month under review. Aircraft take-offs and landings increased to 652 in January from 324 recorded a year earlier.
Burgas and Varna airports are run by Fraport Twin Star Airport Management under a 35-year concession contract awarded in 2006. Fraport Twin Star Airport Management is a 60/40 joint venture of Fraport and Bulgarian company BM Star.
Elsewhere in Southeast Europe, Fraport Group operates the airport in Slovenia's capital Ljubljana, as well as 14 airports in Greece. The group also runs an airport in Antalya, Turkey.
