July 30 (SeeNews) - Orange Romania, a unit of France Telecom's Internet and mobile arm Orange, said on Thursday its revenues in the second quarter of the year fell by an annual 10% to 242 million euro ($284 million), impacted by a drop in equipment sales due to the coronavirus outbreak.
Orange Romania had 10.541 million customers at the end of June, down 1.8% on the year, Orange Romania said in an interim financial report.
Mobile Internet traffic surged by 40% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2020 supported by an increase in smartphone sales and by investments in 4G, 4G+ and 5G networks. The operator's 4G network covered 98.86% of Romania's population at the end of June.
TV services had 528,000 customers at end-June 2020, increase slightly comared to last year. Fixed broadband services had 365,900 customers at the end of the second quarter, up 15% on the year
The Orange Money service registered a record 1 million transactions during the April-June period, five times more than in the same period of 2019. Orange Money user base recorded an increase of 58% in the second quarter, reaching over 222,000 customers at end-June.
Orange Romania revenues fell 2.9% on the year in the first quarter of 2020 to 257.4 million euro.
Last year, Orange Romania's revenues amounted 1.112 billion euro, compared with 1.125 billion euro in 2018.
Romania’s market of just over 19 million people is served by five mobile operators - Orange Romania; Telekom Romania, former Cosmote Romania; RCS&RDS; Vodafone Romania; and insolvent 2K Telecom.
At group level, Orange posted revenues of 10.37 billion euro in the second quarter of 2020, down 0.4% on the year.
