February 23 (SeeNews) - Orange Romania, the local unit unit of France Telecom's Internet and mobile arm Orange, said on Thursday its revenues increased by 4.2% last year compared to 2015, reaching 986.8 million euro ($1.03 billion) due to strong performance in mobile services.
In the fourth quarter alone, the operator generated 259.7 million euro in revenues, up 3.8% on the year, the company said in a statement.
Orange Romania had 10.38 million customers at the end of 2016, up by 2% year-on-year. Out of the total number of customers, some 5 million were subscribers.
"2016 was a year of growth and innovation for Orange in a challenging market environment. In order to provide the best services and unrivalled customer experience, in 2017 we will focus on providing complete communication services, increased connectivity, supported by an efficient network 4G, advantageous offers and integrated ICT solutions for business," Orange Romania CEO Liudmila Climoc said.
Orange's 4G network was the most wide-ranging in Romania at the end of last year, covering 97% of the urban population and 80% of the entire population. Its 4G customer base reached 2.2 million people at the end of 2016, double compared to the previous year.
Also, consumption of 4G mobile data continued its upward trend, being four times higher in 2016 compared to 2015, Orange Romania said.
On the TV segment, the company had over 333,000 subscribers at the end of 2016, up 20.9% from a year earlier.
Romania’s market of just over 20 million is served by five mobile operators - Orange Romania; Telekom Romania, former Cosmote Romania; RCS&RDS; Vodafone Romania; and insolvent 2K Telecom.
At group level, Orange posted a net profit of 3.26 billion euro, up by 10.3% compared to 2015, while turnover edged up by 0.6% to 40.9 billion euro.
