April 26 (SeeNews) - Orange Romania, the local unit of France Telecom's Internet and mobile arm Orange, said on Tuesday its revenues rose by an annual 6.5% to 235.5 million euro ($264 million) in the first quarter of 2016, led by an upturn in mobile services and, to a lesser extent, by increased fixed satellite television services and mobile equipment sales.
Orange Romania had 10.009 million clients at the end of March, down from 10.177 million at the end of 2015.
Mobile Internet traffic doubled as tablet sales also doubled compared to the same period of last year, Orange Romania said. Smartphone sales were up 30% on the year in the first quarter of 2016.
The operator also said its 4G network covers 96.2% of urban population and 72.1% of all population.
Romania’s market of just over 20 million is served by five mobile operators - Orange Romania; Telekom Romania, former Cosmote Romania; RCS&RDS; Vodafone Romania; and 2K Telecom.
At a group level, Orange posted a gross profit of 2.57 billion euro, down 1.6% on the year compared to the same period of 2015 and revenues up 0.6% on the year to 10 billion euro.
