July 12 (SeeNews) - North Macedonia's Agency for Electronic Communications (AEK) has awarded licences for frequencies for 5G networks, local telecommunications company Makedonski Telekom [MSE:TEL] said.
The agency has awarded licences for the use of radio frequencies in the 700 MHz and the 3.6 GHz band, Makedonski Telekom said in a press release on Monday.
Makedonski Telekom is now offering 5G services in the central parts of Skopje, Bitola, Prilep, Ohrid, Struga, Tetovo, Gostivar, Stip and Strumica. The company plans to offer 5G services in 26 cities in the country by the end of the year.
The telco started the implementation of 5G technology in and near the capital Skopje in February.
Makedonski Telekom's shares last traded on the Macedonian Stock Exchange (MSE) on July 8, at an average price of 377 denars ($6.14/6.13 euro).
AEK in November launched an auction to grant three licences for the use of radio frequencies in the 700 MHz spectrum and seven in the 3 GHz band. The agency said at the time it would issue six licences for national coverage for a period of 15 years and four licences for regional coverage, which will be granted for a period of six years.
