November 23 (SeeNews) - European Union (EU) candidates North Macedonia, Montenegro and Albania have aligned themselves with the EU's decision to impose sanctions on Belarus for the response of Belarusian authorities to protests following the 2020 presidential election, the Council of the EU said.
Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Ukraine have also joined the EU sanctions against Belarus, the Council of the EU said in a statement on Friday.
“The European Union takes note of this commitment and welcomes it,” the Council of the EU said.
In October, the Council imposed restrictions, including a travel ban and an asset freeze, against Belarus' president Alexandr Lukashenko and other individuals for "violent repression and intimidation of peaceful demonstrators, opposition members and journalists after the 2020 presidential election in Belarus".
in March, EU member states reached a political agreement on opening accession talks with North Macedonia and Albania, whereas Montenegro opened membership talks in June 2012.
