March 7 (SeeNews) - Montenegro's president Milo Djukanovic said he has tasked deputy prime minister and leader of the United Reform Action (URA) party, Dritan Abazovic, to form a new government.
Abazovic will put together a new cabinet backed by URA and other parties that control the majority of seats in parliament among themselves, Djukanovic said in a statement last week.
The new government would replace the coalition cabinet led by Zdravko Krivokapic, which collapsed last month after losing a no-confidence vote sought by Abazovic over the stalled process of Montenegro's EU accession and the influence of the Serbian Orthodox Church on Montenegro's domestic affairs.
According to local media reports, the new government, which is expected to be formed in the coming days, will be backed by all opposition parties, including DPS - the party of Djukanovic.
The new cabinet is expected to have 16-18 ministries, including a ministry for European affairs, local broadcaster RTCG quoted Abazovic as saying last week.
Montenegro's parliament endorsed in December 2020 the government of Krivokapic, backed by 27 MPs from For the Future of Montenegro coalition, comprising DF and United Montenegro, ten MPs from pro-European coalition Peace is Our Nation, led by Democratic Montenegro, and four MPs from URA party.
