January 19 (SeeNews) - The after-tax profit of Moldovan banks rose 8.5% on the year to 1.48 billion lei ($87.7 million/71.5 million euro) in 2017, the country's central bank, BNM, said on Friday.
Eleven commercial banks operated in the country of 3.5 million people as at end-2017. Out of the eleven, only Eximbank - Gruppo Veneto Banca reported loss as at end-2017, in the amount of 66.8 million lei.
In June, Intesa Sanpaolo and the liquidators of the former Banca Popolare di Vicenza and Veneto Banca in Italy signed a contract under which Intesa acquired certain assets and liabilities of bankrupt Veneto Banca, including its assets in Moldova, Albania, Croatia and Romania.
The top five Moldovan banks generated 90% of the total profit of the country's banking sector.
Moldovan banks' assets increased to 79.54 billion lei at end-2017 from 72.83 billion lei a year earlier, according to BNM data.
