July 22 (SeeNews) - The after-tax profit of Moldovan banks rose by an annual 34% to 941.7 million lei ($52 million/44 million euro) in the first six months of 2021, the central bank, BNM, said.
Eleven commercial banks operated in the country of 2.6 million people as at end-June 2021, BNM said in a data release on Wednesday.
The top five banks generated almost 90% of the total profit of Moldova's banking sector in the period under review. All but one of the top five banks reported higher profits at the end of the first half of 2021.
Moldovan banks' total assets increased to 109.7 billion lei at the end of June 2021 from 94.7 billion lei at end-June 2020, according to BNM data.
Moldova Agroindbank was the largest bank at end-June, with total assets of 33.2 billion lei, followed by Moldindconbank with 22.6 billion lei, Victoriabank with 16.5 billion lei, Mobiasbanca-OTP Group with 14.9 billion lei and by ProCredit Bank with 4.95 billion lei worth of assets.
