March 18 (SeeNews) - Moldova's health ministry announced on Wednesday that it has confirmed the first death from the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in the country.

A 61-year-old woman who had other chronic illnesses has died after seven days of treatment, the health ministry said in a statement.

Moldova has so far confirmed 30 coronavirus cases, as 11,238 people are in self-isolation at their homes, according to the ministry's latest data.

On Tuesday, the country's parliament declared a state of emergency in order to be able to tackle the coronavirus disease outbreak more efficiently.

The country will be in a state of emergency for a period of 60 days, until May 16.

Starting Tuesday, Moldova closed borders with Romania and Ukraine and suspended all international flights.
