CHISINAU (Moldova), May 3 (SeeNews) – Moldova’s agricultural output increased by 1.1% on the year in the first quarter of 2017, mainly due to strong growth in the livestock sector.
Livestock production expanded 1.1% year-on-year in the first quarter and accounted for about 99% of overall farm output during the period, the country's statistical office BNS said on Wednesday.

During the January-March period of 2017 households of all categories registered an increase in the production of cattle and poultry by 2.8% to 36,500 tonnes. In individual households, livestock and poultry breeding volume decreased by 3.2% as a result of a decrease in the average number of cattle - by 4.3% and of pigs - by 6.4%.
Eggs production in households of all categories increased by 2.1% to 126 million, as a result of the increase of the number of laying hens in agricultural enterprises by 10% and in households by 2.9%.
Milk production in households of all categories decreased by 4.1% to 73,700 tonnes, as a result of the decrease of production volume by 4.9% in households. At the same time, due to an increase in productivity rate, milk production in agricultural enterprises increased by 5.2% in the first quarter of the year.
Moldova’s total agricultural output increased by 18.6% last year, mainly due to a 26% rise in plant production and growth of livestock production by 3.1%.
