April 25 (SeeNews) - The length of modernized roads in Romania increased 5% last year compared to 2017, reaching 36,689 km, the national statistical office said on Thursday.
As at the end of 2018, there were 86,234 km of public roads in Romania, of which 20.6% were national roads, 40.7% were county roads and 38.7% were communal roads, INS said in an annual report on the state of the road network.
Out of the total length of national roads, 34.9% (6,194 km) were European roads and 4.6% (823 km) were motorways. In 2017, Romania had 763 km of motorways.
By number of lanes, 10.6% were four-lane roads, 1.6% were three-lane roads and 0.2% were six-lane roads.
At the end of 2018, there were 10,765 km of public railroads in use in Romania, of which 98.7% were normal gauge lines, 1.3% were wide gauge lines and 4 km were narrow gauge lines. The length of electrified railways in use was 4,029 km, representing 37.4% of the total length of the railway network.
Romania, with a territory of some 238,400 square kilometres, has a population of 19 million.
