PRISTINA (Kosovo), February 3 (SeeNews) – The winner of Kosovo’s October 6 snap election, left-wing Self-Determination Movement (VV), has agreed to form a coalition government with second-ranked centre-right Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK), VV leader Albin Kurti said on Sunday.
Kosovo's parliament will vote on Monday on the proposed new cabinet comprising 15 ministries and led by Kurti, the VV leader said in a video file posted on Facebook after a meeting with LDK leader Isa Mustafa.
According to the agreement, VV and LDK will have six ministries each, three ministries will be reserved for ethnic communities, while the position of speaker of parliament will go to LDK.
Over the past two months, VV which controls 29 of 120 seats in parliament, has been holding talks on forming a new government with LDK, which has 28 seats.
The new coalition government needs to be endorsed by at least 61 MPs to take office.
The October 6 election was called after former prime minister Ramush Haradinaj stepped down in July to appear for questioning as suspect before the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague. The institution is investigating crimes committed during the 1990s guerrilla war waged by Kosovo's ethnic Albanians against Serbia's government forces.
Kosovo, considered to be a potential candidate for EU membership by the European Commission, unilaterally declared independence from Serbia in 2008 and has so far has been recognised by more than half of the 193 UN member states. Belgrade does not recognise Kosovo's independence.
