December 28 (SeeNews) - Kosovo police said on Wednesday it has closed to traffic the Merdare checkpoint at the border with Serbia due to blockades on the Serbian part of the road leading to the border, two weeks after closing two crossings for similar reasons.
The road in Serbia leading to the Merdare checkpoint was blocked in the late hours of December 27, Kosovo police said in a Facebook post.
Earlier in December, Kosovo police closed the Jarinje and Bernjak border crossings in the north after roads leading to them on the Kosovo part were blocked by ethnic Serbs.
Tensions have been running high in the northern part of Kosovo for over two weeks. Ethnic Serbs are protesting and blocking the roads to the border with Serbia, demanding the establishment of a Community of Serb Municipalities, as agreed by the governments of Kosovo and Serbia in 2013.
Kosovo unilaterally declared independence from Serbia in 2008. Belgrade does not recognise Kosovo's independence.
