May 23 (SeeNews) - The Croatian unit of German retail chain Kaufland has opened a solar carport in Zagreb - the first such facility in Croatia, local media reported.
The solar carport at Blato store is also Kaufland's first in Europe, news wire SeeBiz quoted company officials as saying earlier this week at the opening ceremony.
The energy generated by the photovoltaic panels at the store will be able to meet 17% of the store's annual electricity needs.
Kaufland Croatia is investing over 20 million kuna ($3.0 million/2.7 million euro) in various environment protection projects in the span of two years, according to the media report.
Kaufland, part of Germany’s Schwarz Group, operates 39 stores and a logistics centre in Croatia where it employs 3,250.
