December 2 (SeeNews) - The economic effect of tourist visits to filming locations of the popular HBO series Game of Thrones in Croatia between 2031 and 2018 is estimated at 180.7 million euro ($205 million), or 30.1 million euro per year, according to economists at the University of Zadar.
The filming of the popular series has created a number of new tourism offerings, as numerous national and international agencies offer a variety of trips and excursions including visits to the filming locations of the series, economists said in a research paper on the economic effects of the filming of the fantasy drama in Croatia on the country's tourism industry published in Zadar University magazine Oeconomica Jadertina 2/2021.
The historic Dalmatian towns of Dubrovnik, Split and Sibenik and their surroundings are some of the filming locations for the Game of Thrones series.
Tourism is a key industry for the Croatian economy, contributing a fifth of the country's GDP.
