June 28 (SeeNews) - The number of foreign tourists who visited Bulgaria in May increased by 119.7% year-on-year, reaching 803,300, with increases registered in all types of visits, the statistical office said on Tuesday.
With a share of 48.8% of all international arrivals in the fifth month of 2022, citizens of EU member states totalled 391,900, the National Statistical Institute (NSI) said in a monthly report.
Romania was the source of the largest monthly number of visitors, or 157,480, although visits of foreign tourists from all EU member states were on the rise last month. Greek citizens were the second most numerous group of EU visitors, at 84,800, followed by citizens of Germany of whom 48,884 visited Bulgaria in May.
Arrivals from Turkey were 136,400 or 40.6% of all visits of tourists from non-EU countries in Europe, followed by Ukraine with 68,000.
A total of 37.4% of all foreign visitors were transiting the country in May. Holiday trips and business trips accounted for 33.3% and 14.4% of all international visitors' arrivals, respectively.
