May 24 (SeeNews) - Italian-American car maker Fiat-Chrysler is considering a partnership with Romanian military equipment producer Romarm for the assembly of military Jeep vehicles, the Romanian company said on Tuesday.
Under the contemplated partnership Romarm will assemble the 4x4 Jeep J8 at its Bucharest plant, Uzina Mecanica Bucuresti (UMB), the Romanian company said in a press release after a meeting with Fiat-Chrysler officials.
Romarm also said that this is an opportunity for the plant to revive its activity as it currently operates at about 10% of its capacity.
If the parties sign a deal, it could be expanded to cover the production of other defence vehicles and automobile components, the company added.
UMB is specialized in research, design, production, repair and modernization of armored vehicles. It employs 270 people and it is best known as a manufacturer of tanks, especially of the new tank of the Romanian Army, TR-85M1. Because of lack of internal military orders, in the last years, the plant focused on exports and on orders coming from the naval, air and oil industries.
