March 28 (SeeNews) - The head of the EU Delegation to North Macedonia urged the country's lawmakers to consider the adoption of amendments to the law on public prosecution.
“This will demonstrate to the citizens as well as to the international community the commitment to establishing accountability for all crime, especially high-level corruption and misuse of power, but also to strengthening the rule of law in the Republic of North Macedonia,” Samuel Zbogar said in a press release.
The changes aim to incorporate the special prosecution office (SPO) into the public prosecution office, the EU ambassador explained, adding that the amendments will also contribute to meeting citizens' desire for rule-based and fair society which ultimately is at the heart of the EU enlargement process.
“We recall that the SPO was established by the major political parties through the Przino Agreement to ensure accountability for the illegal interception of communication and their content,” Zbogar noted.
North Macedonia was granted EU candidate status in 2015 and hopes to launch membership negotiations later this year.
