TIRANA (Albania), January 15 (SeeNews) – The European Union has completed an investment in the water supply system in the northwestern Albanian city of Lezha, ensuring 24 hours clean water supply to its citizens, the delegation of the EU to the country said.
The project has been co-financed by the Swiss government with a grant of 10 million euro ($12.2 million), the German government through the development bank KfW with 3 million euro and the EU with 250,000 euro, the delegation of the EU said in a press release on Saturday.
In November, the EU announced the inauguration of construction and rehabilitation of the water supply and sewerage network in the southwestern Albanian city of Fier. The project was co-financed by the EU with a total grant of 20.4 million euro and by the KfW with 30 million euro.
The EU delegation also announced two programmes for 2018.
EU plans to contribute up to 24 million euro grant proposed under IPA 2018 national programme under a new sector wide water and sewerage investment programme for Albania.
“4 million euro will also support capacity building in both integrated water management and wastewater management, jointly with the Austrian and German cooperation,” the press release reads.
The EU grant support to the water supply and sewerage sector in Albania has exceeded 110 million euro in the last decade, of which about 80% for waste-water collection and treatment in the Albanian coastal regions.
“An overall EU grant of more than 25 million euro has been provided to the cooperation with KfW and the Swiss Cooperation to support municipal water infrastructure for Fier, as well as in Gjirokastra, Lezha, Saranda, Berat-Kucova, Lushnja and Kamza,” the delegation of the EU said.
