September 27 (SeeNews) - The European Commission said on Thursday it moved to the second stage of the infringement procedure against Romania over the country's failure to comply with EU laws to cut petrol vapour emissions at filling stations.
"The Commission opened infringement proceedings on the matter in March this year, and a reasoned opinion, the second stage in EU infringement proceedings, is now being sent," the Commission said in a statement.
"The legislation aims to reduce emissions of volatile organic compounds into the atmosphere from vehicle re-fuelling activities at service stations, as these compounds contribute to respiratory illnesses and harm the environment."
The legislation should have been in place since January 1, 2012.
Romania has two months to reply, the Commission said.
