June 6 (SeeNews) - The European Commission said on Thursday it has approved the allocation of 110 million euro ($124 million) for expansion and upgrade of the water and sewerage system in the Turda - Campia Turzii region.
The EU funding, to be complemented by national co-financing of nearly 45 million euro, will help ensure access to quality water and sanitation services to all of the inhabitants of the southern county of Cluj, the Commission said in a statement.
"I am glad that things are going on and that European funding will help improve living conditions in the Turda-Campia Turzii region. Over 16,500 inhabitants will have quality drinking water in their homes, whereas 14,000 homes will be connected to the sewerage system," European commissioner for regional policy, Corina Cretu, said.
The project provides for the rehabilitation of 104 kilometers of existing water supply network and the extension of over 250 kilometers of pipelines. With regard to the sewer system, the rehabilitation of the existing 48-kilometer long network and its extension by 130 kilometers, the construction of 48 new pumping stations, and the expansion of 2 wastewater treatment plants are planned.
The project is to be completed by the end of 2023.
