BUCHAREST (Romania), February 27 (SeeNews) – The European Commission said on Tuesday it is providing a total of 1.8 million euro ($2.22 million) to help Romania prevent floods.
The project, which is financed from the Cohesion Fund, aims to implement flood prevention measures in 11 river basins in Romania, the Commission said in a statement.
Activities will include the construction of 14 precipitation measuring stations and 9 hydro metric stations, the acquisition of 21 units of equipment for major rainfall measurement and automatic systems for monitoring structural safety parameters for 17 dams. Also, the project envisages the construction of 15 automatic water quality monitoring stations to improve the capacity of the Romanian Water Authority to counteract the effects of the floods.
"The cohesion policy gives us a concrete example of a Europe that offers protection. From this moment on until the end of the budget period, more than 13 million people across the EU will benefit from better flood protection through such investments, " Corina Cretu, European Commissioner for regional policy, said.
Approximately 52,000 inhabitants will benefit from enhanced flood protection due to this European-funded project.
The project will continue works initiated during the 2007-2013 programming period.
