June 9 (SeeNews) - The European Commission (EC) said on Thursday it approved the allocation of a total 127 million euro ($135.8 million) to address water supply and wastewater infrastructure issues in Romania’s Buzau county.
The project will upgrade 13 water supply systems, create 57 water sources extraction points, lay 16 km of sewage collectors and a further 430 km of sewerage network pipes, the EC said in a press release.
A total of 170,392 inhabitants will benefit as a result of the investment from the Cohesion Fund.
"This project is a good example of how cohesion policy, via infrastructure investments, is concretely tackling local challenges. The project will save water, give citizens access to clean water and also create new jobs during its implementation phase," Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms Elisa Ferreira said.
The upgrades of the system will strengthen the local water network’s compliance with the EU Drinking Water and Urban Wastewater directives. This prevents high water losses, insufficient flow and inadequate quality of water from local sources, the EC said.
