BUCHAREST (Romania), October 3 (SeeNews) – The European Commission said on Tuesday it is providing 251.8 million euro ($295.7 million) to Romania to finance extension of the fifth subway railway line in Bucharest.
The section to be built will have a length of 7 km, with 10 new stations and a depot, the European Commission said in a press release.
The financing comes from the European Union's Cohesion Fund.
"Thanks to the European Union, Bucharest will have a modern subway network. This will have a positive impact on the city's air quality, on local companies, on tourism and, of course, on the inhabitants of the neighborhoods that will be served," Corina Cretu, European Commissioner for regional policy, said.
Once finished, the new section will link the western part of the city centre, from Raul Doamnei to Eroilor station, where lines 1 and 3 will be connected.
This section will benefit more than 64,000 people from Bucharest, who will travel between the two points in the city in less than a quarter of an hour. Works are scheduled for completion in June 2018.
