February 2 (SeeNews) - The European Commission (EC) said it approved 183 million euro ($199.36 million) in funding for the construction of a 33.4 km section of Bulgaria's Europe motorway connecting Sofia to Kalotina checkpoint at the Serbian border.
The overhaul, which aims to increase the road's capacity, is funded by the EU's Cohesion Fund under the operational programme Transport and Transport Infrastructure 2014-2020, the Commision said in a statement on Wednesday.
The project consists of two subsections - an already finished 17 km road section and a 16.4 km stretch currently under construction.
On Wednesday, Bulgaria's interim government said it provided some 76.7 million euro to finance road works, including the section of the Europe motorway from Kalotina to the nearby town of Dragoman. The Europe motorway is part of the Trans-European Transport Network.
