April 2 (SeeNews) - The European Commission said on Tuesday it has approved financing of almost 2 billion euro ($2.24 billion) for four major infrastructure projects in Romania.
All of these projects are part of the "Great Infrastructure" Operational Programme, the EU's executive body said in a press release.
The first of the four projects envisages the creation of an integrated road infrastructure network around Bucharest by modernizing several road sections and building new ones. It will benefit from 1 billion euro of financing from the European Commission.
The second project aims to improve underground railway services on the Berceni-Pipera line in Bucharest through technical upgrades, acquisition of new trains and reconstruction of tracks. The electrical and sanitary infrastructure along the 19 km underground line will also be modernised. The project will be funded with almost 100 million euro from the Cohesion Fund.
The third project, to be funded with 600 million euro from the EU, will involve the prevention and control of erosion along the Romanian Black Sea coast, especially in Constanta county.
The fourth project aims at developing sustainable water supply and wastewater treatment systems for over 380,000 people in Timis county. The project received EU funding of over 135 million euro.
For the period 2014-2020, Romania benefits from an allocation of over 22 billion euro under Cohesion Policy.
