October 20 (SeeNews) - The European Commission has approved 80.8 million euro ($12.7 million/10.8 million euro) in financial assistance to Croatia for the revamp of the Zapresic-Zabok railway line in the northwest of the country, the transport ministry said.
The project foresees the modernisation and electrification of the 24 km railway section, which will shorten the time of travel between Croatia's capital Zagreb and the municipality of Zabok, the ministry said in a statement on Thursday.
The Zapresic-Zabok railway section plays an important role in passenger traffic in the metropolitan area of Zagreb, and belongs to a line of regional and international importance, the ministry noted.
Works on the project will begin once Croatia has concluded a deal with a contractor, which is being selected via a tender conducted by state-owned railway infrastructure operator HZ Infrastruktura. Its completion is expected in 2020.
