January 31 (SeeNews) - Belguim's De Smet Engineers & Contractors (DSEC) said it has started basic engineering works on a second generation (2G) ethanol plant project of Croatian oil and gas company INA [ZSE:INA].
DSEC's basic engineering contract with INA covers the OSBL (Outside Battery Limits) portion of the project for the plant that will be built in Sisak, near Zagreb, and will feed on locally grown miscanthus and wheat straw, DSEC said in a statement earlier this month.

It added it will also integrate the selected process package in the overall project study and assess related capital and operational costs (CapEx and OpEx).
"This assignment will allow INA to validate the construction of one of the world's very few 2G ethanol industrial production facility that will contribute to Croatia's effort to meet European Renewable Energy Directive II," it added.
In September, INA said it completed testing of the energy crop miscanthus as a source of bio-fuel as part of a programme focused on ensuring the sustainability and profitability of its refining system. The miscanthus processing has being tested in view of the planned transformation of INA's Sisak oil refinery into an industrial site to serve as a base for bitumen production, a logistics hub and potentially for lubricant production and a bio-component refinery.
The project for the conversion of the Sisak refinery was approved in March 2019.
INA shares last traded on the Zagreb bourse on January 29, closing flat at 3,120 kuna ($462/419 euro). They did not trade by 09:40 CET on Friday.
