January 8 (SeeNews) - Croatia's Zagreb was visited by 23% more tourists than a year earlier in December and recorded a rise in overnight stays by the same margin, tourism news site Hrturizam reported.
Croatia's capital attracted 36,380 domestic tourists, 11% up on the year, and 74,327 foreign tourists, a rise of 30%, in December, Hrturizam reported on Friday.
Of all overnights, foreign tourists accounted for 138,674, an increase of 27% year-on-year, while domestic tourists spent 61,078 overnights, up 15%.
Most of the foreigners arriving to Zagreb came from Italy, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Austria, Slovenia, and Germany.
Spending, generated exclusively by Zagreb's Christmas markets, is forecast at around 500 million kuna ($80.5 million/67.2 million euro), up from an estimated 390 to 438 million kuna in December 2016.
Zagreb has been voted the best Christmas market in Europe in an online poll by European Best Destinations for three consecutive years.
