April 21 (SeeNews) - Croatia's opposition Social Democratic Party, SDP, said on Friday it has submitted a request to parliament to set up a special commission that will look into reasons for the current crisis in retail and food concern Agrokor.
"We do not believe the government. A case study into Agrokor will allow citizens to uncover what is being done with their money and assets", SDP leader, Davor Bernardic, said in a statement.
He added that the inquiry commission should look into the establishment of Agrokor, the company's current market status, the emergence of problems, the role of market regulators in the concern's business operations and the circumstances that led to the government's involvement.
"At the moment neither deputy prime minister Martina Dalic, nor finance minister Zdravko Maric, nor prime minister Andrej Plenkovic enjoy the public's confidence", Bernardic claimed.
On April 10, the government named Ante Ramljak as receiver of Agrokor to lead a restructuring process in the Croatia's indebted largest private concern under a new law adopted by the parliament a week earlier. The law, commonly known as 'Lex Agrokor', was drafted by the government in response to the financial woes at the at the food and retail group.
Ramljak has said that Agrokor's last financial statement was unreliable, therefore the true amount of the company's debt could not be specified. Three international auditing firms have been invited to examine Agrokor's financial statements, Ramljak said at a news conference last week.
