April 21 (SeeNews) - The ruling centre-right Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) has regained popularity, coming to the top spot ahead of centre-left opposition Social Democratic Party (SDP) for the first time in election year 2020, a new monthly opinon poll showed.
If general elections were held now, HDZ would receive 29.9% support, up by a 2.61 index points compared to the March value, while SDP would collect 27.4% of the votes, down by 1.89 points, a survey conducted by Promocija Plus agency for public broadcaster HRT showed on Monday.
The survey was carried out between April 15 and April 18 among 1,400 people, with a margin of error of plus/minus 2.62%.
This is the first time since December 2019 for HDZ to outrun SDP in the survey.
In January, SDP candidate Zoran Milanovic won Croatia's presidential election, defeating incumbent president Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic backed by HDZ, which pushed up the approval ratings of SDP above those of HDZ for the first time since the latter came to power in 2016.
Croatia's next general election is due to take place in late 2020.
The results of the April survey indicate that the only other party that would pass the 5.0% threshold if the elections were held now is the recently unveiled political formation of musician Miroslav Skoro, who came third in the first round of the presidential election. Skoro's Homeland Movement was backed by 9.2% of respondents in the April survey, down by a monthly 1.28 index points.
Skoro established his political formation at the end of February.
