ZAGREB (Croatia), September 10 (SeeNews) – Croatian MEP Dubravka Suica will be in charge of the democracy and demography portfolio in the new European Commission to be headed by president-elect Ursula von der Leyen, the Commission said on Tuesday.
Suica will also serve as one of the five vice-presidents in the new Commission, and will lead, from the Commission side, the work on the Conference on the Future of Europe, the Commission said in a press release after Ursula von der Leyen unveiled her team and the structure of the next EU's executive body in Brussels.
Suica has been a member of the European Parliament (EP) since 2013. She was elected in 2014 as vice chairperson of the EP's Delegation for relations with Bosnia and Kosovo.
"We want to bring new impetus to Europe's democracy. This is our joint responsibility. Democracy is more than voting in elections every 5 years. It is about having your voice heard and being able to participate in the way society is built," Ursula von der Leyen said in the press release.
As a next step, the European Parliament has to give its consent to the entire College of Commissioners. Once the European Parliament has given its consent, the European Council formally appoints the European Commission.
