December 3 (SeeNews) - The defence committee in Croatia's parliament has unanimously supported the planned purchase of two UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters and related equipment for the needs of the Croatian army, the defence ministry said.
"The procurement of the Black Hawk helicopters will provide new capabilities which are important for the further development and modernisation of the Croatian army, as well as for the further development of the homeland security system," the ministry said in a statement on Monday.
The helicopters will serve to fulfil the three main tasks of the Croatian army: protection of the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity, participation in foreign missions and operations, and assistance to civilian institutions.
In late October, the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) said the State Department has approved the possible sale to Croatia of two UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters and related equipment for an estimated cost of $115 million (104 million euro), with the deal pending the approval of the US Congress.
The sale was requested by the Croatian government and will also include designated unique equipment and government furnished equipment, communication security equipment, radios, aircraft warranty, air worthiness support, calibration services, spare and repair parts, support equipment, communication equipment, weapons, ammunition, night vision devices, personnel training and training devices, among others, DSCA has said.
The acquisition of the two UH-60 helicopters is expected to help Croatia significantly increase its capability to provide troop lift, border security, counterterrorism, medical evacuation, search and rescue, re-supply/external lift, and combat support.
US aircraft manufacturer Sikorsky Aircraft Company and US aircraft engine supplier General Electric Aircraft Company will be the principal contractors on the deal.
Croatia has been a NATO member since 2009.
