ZAGREB (Croatia), August 5 (SeeNews) - Croatia plans to invest some 3.5 billion euro ($3.6 billion) in railway infrastructure by 2030, transport minister Oleg Butkovic said.

“This is going to be the decade of railways,” Butkovic said in a government press release last week.

Butkovic, together with prime minister Andrej Plenkovic, took part in a ceremony in Karlovac on July 28 for the signing of contracts for an upgrade of the Hrvatski Leskovac-Karlovac railway section, which is part of the Zagreb-Rijeka railway line.

The overall project for reconstruction of the existing track and construction of a second track of the 44km-long railway section is worth 2.721 billion kuna ($371 million/362 million euro), with 85% of cost to be financed from the EU's operational programme Competitiveness and Cohesion 2014-2020, Croatian railway infrastructure operator HZ Infrastruktura said in a press release.

HZ Infrastruktura said that it signed the deals to carry out the works on the upgrade of the railway section with a consortium of Austria's Strabag and its Croatian and Czech units - Strabag d.o.o. and Stragab Rail a.s., as well as with Czech producer and supplier of signalling, telecommunication, information and automation technologies AZD Praha. It did not elaborate the value of the separate deals.

In January this year, HZ Infrastruktura said it has picked the 1.7 billion kuna ($259 million/227 million euro) joint bid of Austria's Strabag and its Croatian and Czech units as the best offer in a tender for an upgrade of the Hrvatski Leskovac-Karlovac railway section.

Following the upgrade, trains will be able to reach a speed of up to 160 km per hour on the Hrvatski Leskovac-Karlovac railway section, the government's press release said. The upgrade works have to start in up to 42 days and have to be finished in 30 months.
