May 21 (SeeNews) - Croatia has assumed the rotating chairmanship of the Council of Europe, during which it will host 28 events most of which will focus on human rights, the country's government said.
During its six-month chairmanship Croatia will focus on the fight against corruption, the protection of minority rights and cultural heritage, as well as the strengthening of local self-government, the cabinet said in a statement late on Friday.
Croatia took over the chairmanship of the Council of Europe from Denmark and will hold it until November 21.
The chairmanship is expected to prepare Croatia for the country's Presidency of the Council of the EU in 2020.
Croatia joined the EU in 2013.
