Irish low-cost air carrier Ryanair said on Monday it launched rescue fares from Sofia to Berlin Schoenefeld to accommodate customers who have had their travel plans disrupted by Air Berlin’s decision to cancel its flights on the route.
"We’ve launched rescue fares on our Sofia flights to Berlin after Air Berlin announced it will cancel this route," Ryanair head of communications Robin Kiely said in a statement.
A SeeNews email seeking comment from Air Berlin returned no answer by 1700 CET on Monday.
Ryanair expanded its operations in Bulgaria last year, adding flights from Sofia to 19 new destinations - Athens, Baden Baden, Barcelona, Berlin, Birmingham, Brussels, Castellon, Cologne, Dublin, Eindhoven, Glasgow, Hamburg, Liverpool, Madrid, Memmingen, Milano, Rome, Stockholm and Treviso.
Air Berlin is Germany's second largest air carrier, after Lufthansa, in terms of passengers carried.
