SOFIA (Bulgaria), August 18 (SeeNews) – China's CITIC Construction has expressed interest in the construction of two highways in Bulgaria - one connecting the towns of Ruse and Veliko Tarnovo, and another one between the capital Sofia and Kalotina, on the Serbian border, the regional development ministry said.
CITIC Construction has also expressed interest in the construction of a tunnel under Shipka peak, in Stara Planina mountain, the regional development ministry said in a statement on Thursday, following a meeting of minister Nikolay Nankov with representatives of the Chinese company.
“Bulgaria could be the first EU member state in which we start developing projects,” the company representatives said as quoted in the press release. “For us, as a specialised company, the opportunity to take part in all kinds of infrastructure projects in Bulgaria in the near future is of great interest,” they added.
Bulgaria falls within the geographic scope of China’s New Silk Road initiative, the statement reads. The initiative of the Chinese government envisages billions of dollars of investments in infrastructure projects.
Additional meeting are expected to be held shortly, so the Chinese investors can be introduced to the indicative value and more technical details about the three infrastructure projects.
CITIC Construction is the construction and engineering subsidiary of Chinese state owned conglomerate CITIC Group.
